The State of Counter-Trafficking Research | June 2011
Researcher, Programmer, and Donor Perspectives
The report is the resul of a joint initiative by IOM, the NEXUS Institute and UNIAP- It brings together the key issues and outcomes of a three-day interactive consultation among anti-trafficking researchers from around the world to take stock of the state of counter-trafficking research. The event developed from the increased focus within the anti-trafficking research community on the need for improved and empirically based anti-trafficking strategies and programmes. It provided a platform for sharing, scrutinizing, and discussing methods and findings of key anti-human trafficking research by bringing together a group of experienced researchers, practitioners, and donors working on anti-trafficking within the Asia region and beyond.
2009-2010 UNIAP Sentinel Surveillance Poipet
The aim of UNIAP's sentinel surveillance is to assess the situation of Cambodian deportees being returned from Thailand and, using this information, map trafficking trends and patterns; establish estimates of numbers and types of cross-border trafficking victims, particularly those who are not identified as victims and put into the
pool of deportees; and document how brokers and traffickers operate to put migrants
in exploitative situations. Over a period of four months, UNIAP researchers were
deployed to the Poipet international checkpoint on the Thailand-Cambodia border, to
conduct site surveys and structured, in-depth interviews with a random sample of 400
male and female Cambodian labour migrants deported from Thailand.

Effects of the Global Financial Crisis on Womens' Working Conditions and Opportunities
The financial crisis in Cambodia has led to signs of an increase in women entering the sex trade, driven primarily by declining working conditions. Debt bondage to sex establishment owners appears to have increased, with debts primarily paying for remittances to rural families. However, exploitative brokering and deception do not appear to be on the rise.
