UNIAP supports Human Trafficking Information Points in Thailand
Bangkok, 5 April 2010 - UNIAP staff presented human trafficking resource packages, comprising pamphlets, booklets, research reports, newsletters and DVDs, to two Human Trafficking Information Points, located at Thammasat University Library and the Royal Police Cadet Academy, both in Bangkok, Thailand.
Since 2004, UNIAP has been working with Thai universities, government agencies, and private sector organisations to create these information hubs, first at Thammasat University, followed by Thailand Knowledge (TK) Park Learning Library, and more recently, the Royal Police Cadet Academy. A fourth Information Point at Burapha University Library is currently under construction.
The Information Points have been established to provide information about human trafficking to students, academics, researchers, police officers, counter-trafficking practitioners and the wider public. The aim is to raise awareness about human trafficking, encouraging the public to report potential trafficking cases and help prevent trafficking crimes taking place.
The materials provided today at Thammasat University Library and the Royal Police Cadet Academy include Human Trafficking Laws – Legal provisions for Victims (UNIAP, 2010) the Case Management Manual – Assisting Trafficked Persons with their Return and (Re)integration in Thailand (International Organization for Migration, 2010), Travel Smart-Work Smart – A Smart Guide for Migrant Workers in Thailand (International Labour Organization, 2007), the Scope and Elements of Identification of Trafficked Persons (Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Thailand, 2008) and an animated DVD by MTV Exit called Intersection (2010).
The Information Points are just one of the forums that UNIAP uses to disseminate high-quality and up-to-date information on human trafficking to the counter-trafficking sector. Through the SIREN initiative (Strategic Information Response Network) UNIAP provides information, data and analysis on cutting edge issues in human trafficking in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region.
