UNIAP: Beyond the GMS
UNIAP works in Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Each country project has an office with the project management office operating out of Bangkok, Thailand.
UNIAP serves trafficking victims from the Greater Mekong Sub-region wherever they find themselves exploited. As the incidence of trafficking from this region to further destinations in Asia, Europe and the Middle East are brought to our attention and the criminal networks that facilitate this go unpunished, there is an urgency to address this aspect of the crime.
Further, as secretariat to COMMIT, UNIAP has been mandated under the MOU to call upon countries outside of the region to join our fight and, in particular, encourage destination countries from outside the GMS to suppress the crime through mutual cooperation.
Through the Cross-regional linkages initiative, UNIAP is actively engaged with partners in destination countries to coordinate and facilitate information sharing, support partnerships, and encourage a stronger response to trafficking beyond the region. This is a clear gap in global counter-trafficking response that needs to be addressed.
